'Inquiry' and 'enquiry' are interchangeable in the US and the UK. However, in the UK, it is becoming preferable to use 'inquiry' to denote 'an investigation' and 'enquiry' to denote 'a question'.In India both the words are used to carry the same meaning as done in U.K. The word ' Inquiry' is used in relation to a formal 'inquiry' whereas the word 'enquiry' is used to denote ' the act of questioning.Therefore in case of departmental proceeding the word used is 'Inquiry' indicating that it is a formal inquiry. |
